What Should You Do If Your A/C Goes Out This Summer?

Ohio is known for its constantly changing weather. But it’s no secret that the heat is relentless when the summer sun is shining. Sun shining, sweat-inducing heat is certainly no joke. And these past couple of months have been going strong! Cool air and a functioning air conditioning system is the secret weapon to enduring Ohio’s heat. Okay, so maybe it’s not exactly a secret, but your air conditioner is the key to surviving the summer. So, what happens if your air were to go out this season? Are you familiar with basic troubleshooting steps? Do you have a backup plan ready if needed? If you haven’t thought that far ahead, no worries! That’s what Beavercreek Heating & Cooling is here for!

What Should You Do If Your A/C Goes Out This Summer?

There are a few things you should check and can try before calling in the cooling experts. First, if your A/C suddenly stops working, make your way over to the thermostat and confirm the batteries do not need to be changed. Oftentimes, the source behind A/C troubles is because of dead or even low battery life. However, if your batteries seem to be working just fine and your A/C concerns persist, try lowering the temperature by 5 or 10 degrees and turning the mode on “cool.” Your A/C may just kickstart back into blowing out cool air and start working for you again. You should also check your circuit breaker to see if maybe the switch flipped and simply needs to be flipped back to the “on” position.

Still not working? Try visiting the compressor outside. You want to make sure it is running normally. If it is making its regular whirring sound, it should be fine. If it’s not running or it is making a funky sound, give us a call! While you are there, you should scan the surrounding area to make sure there is no physical damage to the unit. Things to keep an eye out for are fallen outdoor items, large branches that could’ve landed on top of the unit, or water damage. If your unit is still giving you issues and you can’t pinpoint the problem, call us, and we will head out to your home as soon as we can!

What Should You Not Do If Your A/C Goes Out This Summer?

The last thing you want to do is try DIYing a repair. This is number one at the top of our list of don’ts. While there are times a DIY repair may seem simple enough, there are many things that can go awry with a DIY repair. So, take it from us and leave the extensive repairs to the professionals. Next, don’t use heat-inducing contraptions like the stove. If your air is out for the moment, you don’t want to add to the effects of the heat by deciding to bake or use your stove right now. In addition, you should also refrain from opening any windows or external doors of your house.

Finally, a common myth is that opening your freezer can provide relief from the accumulating heat. We don’t recommend this. Your groceries could spoil; it’s just not worth the tiny fraction of cool air you may get. Instead, try utilizing a portable fan or cooling unit. Last, of all, don’t get mad during your wait. Summer is our busiest time of the year. And just like you, many other people experiencing various issues with their systems may have made an appointment beforehand. Rest assured; our customers are our top priority. Your safety and well-being are important to us. We will get to your home as SOON as we can and get you squared away!
