DIRTY HVAC REGISTERS CAN CAUSE:

Before we give you the step-by-step guide to cleaning your registers, let’s talk about why it’s important to do so. We all know the importance of keeping house, but there are a few factors that are directly affected when HVAC registers are not included in your regular cleaning routine.

  • LOWERED SYSTEM EFFICIENCY: You want to set your HVAC system up to succeed, so it’s important to keep your HVAC system efficient. When registers are overladen with dust and debris, your HVAC system has to work harder and longer than it is intended to. When this occurs, its efficiency is compromised.
  • RAISED ENERGY BILLS: When efficiency is compromised, energy is also affected. This is because when your HVAC system is constantly running to keep up, it uses more energy, leading to higher expenses. Don’t let your bills go through the roof!
  • POOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY: Indoor air quality matters! The air we breathe indoors affects our health and well-being. Clogged-up HVAC registers can spread dust, allergens, and other particles throughout your entire home, causing eye and nose irritation; it can also exacerbate preexisting medical conditions in those who already deal with allergies or respiratory issues.

HOW TO CLEAN AN HVAC REGISTER:

Knowing the simplest and best way to clean your HVAC registers will help you stay on track to include them in your cleaning routine. Plus, using the right tools can make a big difference in making sure you don’t continuously postpone this tedious chore.

  1. Before you begin cleaning, take a moment to get all the required items together: a screwdriver (to take the register off), a vacuum with a brush or narrow nozzle attachment, warm water, dish soap, and a soft rag.
  1. If taking off the registers is possible, we do advise doing so. You can use the screwdriver for this step. Keep in mind, though it is not required, that if the register is extra dusty, you may want to make it a point to remove it before cleaning.
  1. Now, go ahead and initiate cleaning the register by using a vacuum cleaner with a brush or nozzle attachment to suck up any loose dust and debris from the registers. (If you were able to remove the register, carefully vacuum around the opening of the vent. Please be careful not to vacuum down into the ductwork.)
  1. Next, you shift your focus to wiping down the register. If the register is not overly dirty, lightly moisten a cloth with warm water and dish soap to clean it. In the event you did not take the registers off, just be mindful not to use an excessive amount of water. Water dripping into the ductwork is never a good idea.
  1. For the registers that were removed, to thoroughly clean them, place them in warm water and dish soap where they can soak for about 5-10 minutes. After they have soaked, gently scrub off the layers of dust, rinse them, and wipe them down.
  1. Once all the registers are clean and dry once again, gently return them back to their original positions.

Taking care of your HVAC registers is necessary for maintaining good indoor air quality and creating a cozy and comfy living space. By regularly cleaning them using the right methods and tools, you can enjoy better air circulation and overall health. So, don’t forget this important task and start adding it to your cleaning routine today for a healthier and happier home environment!
