New Year’s Resolutions are an excellent way to better yourself. Some folks aspire to earn more money or find a better job. Others plan to shed some added weight. Some people strive for new relationships. Some pray for health. And then some people, particularly homeowners, aim to fix up their houses and keep them warm and cozy through the upcoming year. For those of you who are planning to improve on your home, we at Beavercreek Heating & Cooling prepared a list of easy resolutions for your home’s HVAC in 2020 for your consideration. Who knows? They might save your system from disaster, or save you money!
Simple Resolutions
1. Prepare to start purchasing a higher efficiency filter if you have not previously, and replace it at least every 90 days. These latest high-efficiency pleated filters hold a charge that works like an electromagnet to capture the smallest particles from your air — particularly the ones that contain bacteria.
2. Guarantee you have a minimum of 24 inches of space surrounding your exterior AC systems and interior heating pumps.
3. Reduce rubble, such as pollen, leaves, twigs, and other yard waste every throughout the spring, summertime, and autumn from the top and the surfaces of your exterior air-conditioning units and heat pumps. Do not allow the lawnmower to discharge any grass clippings towards the unit.
4. At a minimum, at least once a month, inspect insulation on your refrigerant lines traveling into the home. If you find any are gone or have gotten damaged, restore them.
5. Inspect and make sure your unit is still on an even and flat surface. Remember, the ground can shift or collapse. So each year, make sure that your outside air-conditioning units and heat pumps rest on a firm and solid area or on concrete pads.
6. Avert drain clogs with some proper maintenance. To do so, each year, empty a cup of bleach combined with water down your AC’s condensate drain to arrest the formation or growth of mold and algae, frequent causes for clogs.
7. In the summertime, shut off the water to your furnace humidifier. When the fall comes, or when you anticipate turning on the heat again, use a new humidifier wick filter. Place the humidistat set to between 35 percent to 40 percent relative humidity. Lastly, don’t forget to turn the supply of supply back on.
8. It’s never a good idea to close off more than 20 percent of the register vents in your home. Not only will this avoid putting any unnecessary stress on your HVAC system, but it will also guarantee proper airflow in your home.
9. This one seems simple. But you’d be surprised at the number of people who forget this lifesaving measure. Replace the batteries in your home’s smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector at least once a year. New Year’s Day is a great day to make it happen.
10. Finally, the most important of all, be proactive rather than reactive with your home’s heating and cooling systems. It’ll save you money and trouble every year. Because most home systems have both heat and AC, we strongly recommend homeowners to schedule routine HVAC system maintenance checkups — both in the spring (for your home’s cooling equipment) and then again in the fall (for your home’s heating system equipment).
