Heating Tips for Holiday Parties

Time sure flies! As December begins, it’s official. The holiday season is fast underway! We at Beavercreek Heating and Cooling understand all the hard work you do to create that perfect holiday gathering. It’s no small feat. And, because of the frigid temperatures outside, you try to guarantee your home is welcoming and comfortable for your friends and family. Ironically, all that holiday cooking, coupled with a dwelling complete with guests, tends to make your place unusually hot without some essential steps. To ensure your holiday party has the perfect temperature to accommodate all your guests’ comfort, we compiled some tips from our trusted HVAC pros.

  1. Make sure to get a routine maintenance check-up before your gathering. Although your furnace might be keeping your home warm right now, it is essential to plan ahead and limit potential breakdowns. In addition to a major holiday headache, it’ll save you money in the long run.
  2. Check around your heating devices and furnace vents to make sure they are clear of anything that might be flammable. As guests start to arrive, they can quickly become obstructed without you being aware of it.
  3. Install a programmable thermostat to regulate itself to a lower temperature automatically. This will especially help when you are cooking. With the added heat from cooking food and a home filled with people, your home can get miserably hot. A lot of us can remember a time or two at a holiday gathering in the past where it became a little too warm. The more warm bodies and the more cooking, the hotter it gets.
  4. Set quilts or blankets on your sofas and couches, so they are readily available for those visitors who are known to be a little cooler than the others. It’ll keep them from the appeal of adjusting the thermostat without you knowing it. Nobody wants their guests touching their thermostats.
  5. Cook food as much food as possible ahead of time. This will reduce some of the extra heat generated from a lot of cooking during the day of your party.
  6. If your home has a functional fireplace, take advantage of it during your gathering! It’ll enhance the seasonal ambiance, producing warmth, and enabling you to lower your thermostat. This could save you some cash on your energy bill while at the same time keeping your guests comfortable.
  7. Be sure to lock up all of your windows. Locking them creates a tighter seal to keep the warm air inside and the cold air outside. As a bonus, it can also help dissuade your guests from opening one when you aren’t looking.
  8. Buy in a whole-home humidifier. Humidifiers really empower your home to sustain its heat. They improve comfort and permit you to leave your thermostat at a lower setting. Humidifiers also prevent dry air, minimizing static electricity – which is another way to make sure your guests remain content.
  9. Reverse your ceiling fans, if you can, and utilize them during your party. Most ceiling fans incorporate a “reverse” setting that will propel back downward the naturally rising warm air. Doing this is a great way during the winter to get the most out of your home’s heat. As a bonus, they also support air circulation, promoting an even temperature level.
  10. Consider space heaters if your celebration is going to be in a cooler room in your house. This should keep the temperature even, so you don’t have to turn up the thermostat. For increased holiday spirit, if fancied, find one that resembles a fireplace.
  11. Last but not least, be sure to check your furnace filter prior to your big event and, if necessary, change it.
